How common is ed?

For many, it helps to know just how common a problem this is among men, whether it is normal to have this problem, and what the associated causes might be.

Cause of ED

ED can be caused by physical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, and more, and post-op surgical conditions from prostate and bladder procedures. Erectile Dysfunction can also be caused by many emotional issues, including depression, stress, anger, and a general loss of hope in the course of one’s life. Alcohol and drug use can also affect male sexual performance, and can exacerbate the emotional problems associated with ED.

How Common is ED?

Many men have found that learning about the prevalence of ED improves their outlook on the problem, and realizing their common problem has a range of available solutions. Strictly speaking, the medical answer to the question ‘Is ED normal’? is ‘no’. That is, erectile dysfunction is a dysfunction and abnormality of the sexual function. But the answer to the question, ‘Is ED common’? is ‘yes’, and it is treatable. Many men suffer with this condition, and, while not common for younger men, ED affects about 30 million men in the United States. (Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2012). 1 in 10 men is estimated to have ED at some point in his lifetime. (Cleveland Clinic, 2019), and up to 50% of men in their 50s. (University of Wisconsin Health, 2019). Men older than 40 are three times more likely to experience complete ED than younger men. (The Journal of Urology, 1994)
